Yes, I think it's about control. Though you can take some kind of CMS, like Wordpress, and edit it. However, sometimes you want your site to be as 'lean' as possible. CMSs usually have a lot of overhead.

It all depends on what kind of site you want. I wouldn't build a blog from scratch. However, something original, like www.devlisting.com, was build hand coded.

What a wonderful article. I have read so much over the last few months and it all leaves me reeling. I have a small site with freewebs.com as I didn't really know what else to do. (I'm of that generation!!) After reading this feel I understand a lot clearer. Can you tell me one thing. Why is it then that people want to learn how to build a site using code? Is it because it gives you complete control over how the site is set out.
Thanks again

One of the better articles I have read this year. You've certainly hit the nail on the head and I can't fault even any of the tips. Page load size and writing for people are the points which resonate with me the most, if someone followed all these tips to the letter, I have no doubt that they will be able to succeed and shoot through the roof with great rankings.

A good number 13 point would be to submit articles to lots of social media sites and grow your presence at the sites. This will certainly increase traffic surges, hence the ROI for the site. Thanks a lot for this post, you reminded me what counts in the blogosphere - I had lost track for a while.
